Mastery

Mastery

There’s something in your life that you want to master, but you don’t think you’re capable of reaching that level.

It could be a skill, a trade, an art, or something more abstract like mastery of your emotions or mastering social and communication skills.

The desire to master something can oftentimes leave us feeling hopeless, staring at the top of a mountain from its base. “There’s no way I can climb that mountain, it’s too high.”

However, the path up every mountain is the same – just start by putting one foot in front of the other.

Yes, some mountains are more difficult to climb. Yes, sometimes you have to backtrack to find the correct path. Yes, some mountains you’ll never summit… but you’ll never reach the top if you don’t start walking. Even if you don’t reach the top, isn’t that view from halfway up a helluva lot better than the view from the ground?

In this same way, all mastery is within your grasp. Mastery of emotions and reactions, mastery of your art… You just have to start with that first step. Surely you can become just a tiny bit better today than you were yesterday, right? Just a baby step. And then another. And then another. Pretty soon, those baby steps turn into regular steps, then into leaps and bounds, snowballing towards mastery.

The next thing you know, you’re wondering what took you so long to start walking.
